How Firm a Foundation

Building our house has provided a few good opportunities for teaching my kids some great lessons. One of those golden opportunities came when we were about to pour the foundation. I went onto the lot and found the perfect rock, brought it home and fancied it up by painting it white. Then I wrote on it, the words to one of my favorite verses of scripture in the Book of Mormon.

Helaman 5:12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

Then for FHE (family home evening- a night each week that our family gathers to pray and sing together, have a lesson, do something fun together, or serve someone) we had a lesson about foundations. We talked about what foundations do. We discussed this verse of scripture and talked about what we would need to do as a family to build our home, our family, on the rock of our Savior. We committed, by signing our names on our special rock, to constantly work on keeping our new home free from the things that our Savior would want us to avoid, contention, inappropriate television and media, bad words, etc.

After we signed it we brought it to our lot and picked a spot for it to be buried. The next day they poured the foundation with our special commitment tucked inside. I'm planning on printing a picture of our rock and keeping it up in the house somewhere, for us to remember!
